The funerary jade mask of K'inich Janaab' Pakal is the most emblematic piece of the holdings of the Museo Nacional de Antropología (National Museum of Anthropology, INAH). This Mayan masterpiece was created at the end of the 7th century as part of the funerary attire of the most celebrated ruler of the Maya reign of Palenque: Pakal the Great. The present edition examines the most exiting archeological discovery of the 20th century and the analysis done by a multidisciplinary group of scientists interested in solving the multiple mysteries of the governor and his era, the materials used by lapidary workers to elaborate the mask, its meaning and the death ceremonies in the Temple of Inscriptions.
