Engraved t.p. with port. of author. On A3v is port. of Cardinal Luigi d'Este (1538-1586), to whom the work is dedicated. Numerous engraved ill., many of them juxtaposing human facial types with the faces of animals (repeats). Head- and tail-pieces made up from printer's ornaments, historiated initials.
Binding: limp vellum. Title written at head of spine. Remains of 2 pairs of ties at foredge.
At upper left-hand corner of front pastedown is Theodore Besterman's calligraphic label, signed in the plate by P.S.
