Edition Notes

Year of publication appears before place of publication and printer on title page.

In Spanish and Aymara. Includes a "Vocabulario breve aymara de los vocablos mas comunes ..."

There are two Lima 1616 versions of this work that have been confused with one another. The other version (B616.T689a1) includes a reprint of the Seville, 1604 edition of the "Catecismo en la lengua española y aymara del Piru"; this version does not. The two versions also differ in signatures and foliation. This version (B616.T689a2) has been misdescribed in Viñaza and Vargas Ugarte; both claim that the final count consists of 26 leaves when in fact it consists of only 16 leaves (i.e., 14 numbered leaves and two unnumbered leaves). Viñaza's signature statement, however, and his description of the contents match the John Carter Brown Library copy. Vargas Ugarte claims that the copy seen by him, apparently now in the Biblitoca Nacional del Perú (Lima), was incomplete and that it contains a section entitled "Para administrar el Viatico a los enfermos," appearing before the "Breve vocabulario que comienza por la aymara al contrario del passado" and after the "Orden de celebrar el matrimonio y velaciones." The collation statement Vargas Ugarte gives, however, matches that of the John Carter Brown Library copy except for the final count that begins with the "Breve vocabulario ..."

Signatures: A-F G ²A-²G H-I ã e i õ (A1 verso blank)

Title vignette (Jesuit coat of arms); decorative initials, printer's devices.

Viñaza. Bib. española de lenguas indígenas, 144.

Vargas Ugarte, R. Impresos peruanos, 92.

John Carter Brown Library copy has ms. corrections on leaves 39 verso and 40 recto.
