In 1859 La Guéronnière published an anonymous pamphlet "Le pape et le congrès," to which the Bishop of Orléans published two replies. The polemic was continued in the journals, notably Le Siècle and Le Constitutionnel, the editor of the latter, A. P. Grandguillot, replying to the Bishop in three successive letters and publishing a letter of his predecessor, Mgr. Rousseau, written in 1810, and containing ideas diametrically opposed to those of Dupanloup. This called forth the "Lettre de Mgr l'év́eque d'Orléans à M. Grandguillot," Paris, 1860 (reprinted in the "Proces," p. [4]-21) which was the cause of the suit brought by Le Siècle and the Rousseau family.
