Edition Notes

Gift book from the people of East Flanders to the people of the United States in thanks for U.S. food aid to Belgium during and after World War I. Includes 17 original works of art on paper by prominent Belgian artists; text in calligraphic and illuminated manuscript.

Cover title.

The address "Au peuple americain" (on two leaves at front) is hand lettered and ruled within a double ruled border inside an elaborate botanical frame with a U.S. shield, a cameo miniature, and several Belgian coats of arms interspersed; painted predominantly in blue, red, green, gold and silver. Signed in manuscript on p. [2] by approximately 35 members of the Comité.

"La couverture de l'album est dessinée et la reliure en peau du truie est repoussée à la main par Auguste de Decker-Lemaire de Gand. Les fermoirs sortent des ateliers de Mr. Bourdon. La cordelière a été faite par Mr. Ballion-Versavel"--Colophon.

In doublure pigskin armorial binding with colored glass bosses, brass clasps and silk braid marker; top edge gilt. Endpapers are red-and-gold flocked fabric; flyleaves are green botanical-patterned wallpaper.

Includes at end a facsimile of the Treaty of Ghent, five mounted photographic prints, and a list of contributing artists.

LC copy has bookplate: Ex libris Woodrow Wilson.
