Pighius traveled with Karl Friedrich, hereditary prince of Jü̈lich-Cleve-Berg, through Austria and Italy, where Karl died at age 19 in Rome in 1575. Pighius wrote the book in part as a panegyric for Karl, in part as a description of their travels. In the latter endeavor the book became a foundational work for subsequent Grand Tour literature.
