520 $aSometimes called the ?founder of American ornithology?, Mark Catesby (1683-1749) was also a significant naturalist and scientific artist. Without Catesby{u2019}s help, the systems of Carl Linnaeus and the other great taxonomists of the eighteenth century would have been far less complete. Catesby also introduced the practice of illustrating birds, fish, animals, and plants amidst their natural environments. His major work, The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands, was considered the most elegant work on the flora and fauna of British North America produced in the eighteenth century. This book examines both Catesby{u2019}s life and his impact as a naturalist.
