500 $a"Like most of my works, this book on Joseph Brodsky's poem Speech [about] Spilled Milk was not inspired by the text. If it sprung from any poetry, it was the poetry of the city ... I once realised that in the city centre, the old doors in the main entrances to the St. Petersburg tenements have vanished. Old, with peeling paintwork, carved from natural wood and decorated with borders and panels, rounded or straight, each one is unique, just like the house to which it belongs ... I walk along Pestel Street, studying the miraculously surviving (for the time being) old doors. Forty years ago, Joseph Brodsky used to walk along this street, past these same houses" -- Mikhail Karasik's web site at www.artists-book.net
