520 8 $aThis catalogue documents and expands the exhibition 'Resist: be modern (again)', curated by artists and researchers Alice Maude-Roxby and Stefanie Seibold, exploring the practices of women artists of the 1920s and 30s. The project looks back in particular at revolutionary art, design, performative and written practices via the lens of contemporary art, theory and design practitioners, highlighting the importance and influence of these long-lost early avant-garde practices into the present. It is part of a larger research project highlighting the contributions to modernism of women in general and non-heterosexual women in particular.00Includes figures such as: Alice Austen, Berenice Abbott & Elizabeth McCausland, Natalie Clifford Barney, Barron & Larcher, Esther Eng, Elizabeth Eyre de Lanux and Evelyn Wyld, Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, Lotte Goslar, Barbara Ker-Seymer, Jane Head and Margaret Anderson, The Little Review, Enid Marx, Lilly Reich, Ada 'Bricktop' Smith, Renée Vivien, A Lelia Walker, Virginia Woolf and others. Exhibition: John Hansard Gallery, Southampton, UK (25.05. - 17.08.2019).
