520 8 $aDe West-Berlijnse kunstenaar Johannes Grützke (1937) is de eerste onder zijns gelijken uit het vrije Duitsland die vanaf de tweede helft van de vorige eeuw niet bij een avant-garde wilden horen. Hij begon als figuratief schilder en tekenaar. Net als in Nederland werd de 'vooruitstrevende' kunstenaar in de oude Bondsrepubliek geacht stelling te nemen, artistieke en disciplinaire grenzen te slechten. Grützke weigerde zich echter aan te passen aan de modernistische mores.
