520 $aOn 7 September 1822, Dom Pedro of Alcantara, heir to the House of Braganza and Prince Regent of Brazil, dramatically declared his country independent and led it into a two-year war of liberation. At first his chances of success seemed remote. The treasury was empty and the country was divided, while Portugal was vigorously raising loans and reinforcing its garrisons with ships and men. It was only a matter of time before the Brazilians were overwhelmed.
520 8 $aOnly by seizing command of the sea could they cut the Portuguese supply routes, expel their troops and secure their country's independence. But how? Brazil had no navy. It lacked ships, supplies and reliable officers and men.

520 8 $aBased on original research, 'Independence or Death' describes how the Brazilian government pulled it off. How, by luck and inspired improvisation it created a new national navy and solved its manpower problems by secretly recruiting officers and men in London and Liverpool.
520 8 $aAnd how, under the inspired leadership of the quirky genius Lord Cochrane, the navy swept the Portuguese from the seas; secured the evacuation of the enemy garrisons by an audacious bluff; and then ensured the integrity of the new Brazilian Empire by suppressing the serious north-eastern revolt which followed.
520 8 $aAgainst the background of local politics and of British foreign policy, the book provides a detailed account of the operations of the Brazilian Navy during the period; assesses their importance to the war; and sketches the careers and subsequent fates of the British officers and men whose audacity and skill were so essential to Brazil's final triumph.
