505 0 $aIntroduction -- Genre and composition in the Book of Aristeas -- The central narrative ; the transfiguration of history into charter myth -- Enforcing the narrative veracity : the rhetoric of historiography in the Book of Aristeas -- The origins and early history of the LXX : guidelines for a reconstruction of the past -- The Homeric paradigm : a hypothesis on the genesis of the LXX and the Book of Aristeas -- Conclusion: the Book of Aristeas between two worlds.
520 1 $a"The Letter of Aristeas tells the story of how Ptolemy Philadelphus of Egypt commissioned seventy scholars to translate the Hebrew Bible into Greek." "The Letter was accepted as a straightforward historical account up to the seventeenth century. Since then, it has usually been considered a fictional account, written for apologetic purposes. Stressing its generic affinities with Greek historiography of the Hellenistic period, Sylvie Honigman argues that this approach is reductive. Although not a historical account in the modern sense of the word, the Letter was regarded as such by ancient readers. However, Honigman maintains that the Letter was not intended as a mere historical account, but as a charter myth for diaspora Judaism." "She argues that the process of translation described in the Letter recalls the process of establishing an authoritative text. The work of the translators of the Septuagint is equated with work on the text of Homer which was being carried out by contemporary Greek scholars of the Royal Library of Alexandria."--Jacket.
