520 $aA history of the Swedish Israel Mission (SIM). Ch. 3 (pp. 73-123), "Missionen under antisemitismens segertåg, 1919-1945" ("The Mission during the Progress of Antisemitism"), deals with the organization's activities during the rise of antisemitism in Europe. Before World War I, SIM worked mainly outside of Sweden, but with the subsequent influx of needy Jews from Eastern Europe, the Mission reactivated itself at home, believing the newcomers would be more susceptible to Christianity than the socially stable local Jews. The emphasis in Sweden, however, was on collecting money for work abroad, especially in Vienna, where SIM opened an office in the late 1920s. In conjunction with the Austrian Evangelische Allianz, the activities there focused on teaching Jews Christianity, but in the 1930s missionizing became increasingly central. By 1938, SIM had acquired an important role among Vienna's 8,000 baptized Jews; the organization helped them materially and assisted them to emigrate. In 1938-41, 3,000 baptized Jews left Austria with the help of SIM. Those who remained were provided with food, clothing, and accomodation, and those deported to Poland were sent food packages as long as the Germans allowed it. Baptized Jews deported to Theresienstadt also received help for a while. Friedrich Forell, a baptized German Jew who led SIM's Vienna office in 1933-38, initiated some short-lived activities in Paris after he was expelled from Austria, inter alia helping 70 Jews to convert. After a brief internment in a camp in southern France, he emigrated to the U.S. SIM's Vienna office closed down in 1941. Notes that SIM's attitude toward Zionism changed from negative to more positive during the 1930s, in response to the increasing antisemitism.$c(From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism).
