520 $aThis excellent collection of papers offers a sample of Dean Fosbroke's writings and lectures, especially his insight on Second Isaiah. Mr. French as editor has drawn together some moving reflections of an extraordinary scholar and church leader. Several articles in the Interpreter's Bible on the prophets, especially on Amos, together with the Dean's Good Friday addresses published as By Means of Death complete his published work. The Winslow Lectures of 1950 were published by Seabury Western setting out Dean Fosbroke's wondrous description of Divine Transcendence in the Old Testament. Those who would like a further expansion of this biblical theme might like to explore the Bishop Paddock Lectures of 1946 given by Cuthbert Simpson, and published as Revelation and Response. Professor Simpson was then the professor of Old Testament at General Seminary and became the Regius Professor of Hebrew at Christ Church Oxford and then the Dean of Christ Church. He and Dean Fosbroke were companions in the study of the Old Testament and developed together many of the themes Dean Simpson then published. Dean Fosbroke was too modest and too much a perfectionist to allow much that he did to be published. Bishop Stephen Bayne wrote a moving introduction in this present volumne. Thirty years of students at the General were encriched by their study under the Dean. Bishop Bayne was one.
