520 $aDiscusses the essence of religion (as a social phenomenon) and religiosity (a property of individuals) from the perspective of a historian, as a preliminary theoretical clarification in order to approach the problem of antisemitism and to provide a comprehensive rational answer to the question: "Why did non-Jews from the Middle Ages to the present kill millions of almost defenseless Jews?" Using his own definition of antisemitism (see his "Toward a Definition of Antisemitism", 1990), considers the extreme irrationality of antisemitism as its essential feature which distinguishes it from other kinds of hostility toward Jews. Places the origins of antisemitism in medieval Christian Europe when irrational Christian anti-Jewish stereotypes and myths gained social significance and were incorporated into European culture and historiography. Distinguishes a "physiocentric antisemitism" in the 19th century, promoted by socialistic or racial theories, culminating with Nazi antisemitism and the Final Solution.$c(From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism).
