520 $aSeptember 17, 1862. Anson Baird, an assistant surgeon in the Union Army, is on the front line of what will come to be known as the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, the Battle of Antietam. Anson finds himself fighting alongside a slave named John. Together, the two men survive, and Anson assigns John a new identity as "William Sullivan Dare" in the hope that it will free him. Twenty years later on the Fraser River in British Columbia, Anson and William are now fighting a new battle against the unscrupulous business ethics of the province's pioneer salmon canners. When William disappears under mysterious circumstances, Anson is left to wonder what has become of him.
