505 0 $aGay straight alliances: from an idea to a social movement -- In the trenches: LGBT students struggle with school and sexual identity -- "We're not going to take it anymore:" the beginnings of lesbian, gay, bisexual (and straight) student resistance -- A little help from our friends: state and national organizations step in to help out and raise the stakes -- Caught in the crosshairs: becoming the latest target of the religious right -- Making headlines: media coverage of the debates over GSAS -- The battles continue: life on the frontlines in schools across the country -- Harnessing the social and political power of the GSA movement.
520 $aGay-Straight Alliances from the high school to college level have garnered increasing attention over the last decade, but there has yet to be a full length longitudinal study of such organizations and their role in youth identity formation, gay rights, and debates over sexuality issues in education. Miceli makes an important contribution to GLBT studies more generally by not painting gay youth as victims - instead, the author focuses on ways that today's gay youth come out in an environment that, comparative to the experience of previous generations, promotes a feeling of self-acceptance and integrity, which ultimately allows them to more actively challenge homophobia in their schools and communities.
