520 $aThe first part of the novel is narrated by the editor. A conservative young woman is forced to marry George Colwan, Laird of Dalcastle, whom she despises for his love of drinking and dancing. She gives birth to two sons, George, indisputably the Laird's son, and Robert who seems different. Young George is raised by his liberal father, but Robert is raised by his mother and her spiritual advisor to follow a sect of Calvinism that teaches predestination. The brothers meet in Edinburgh, where Robert starts following and taunting George. Finally, George is murdered; the only witnesses are a prostitute and her client, who implicate Robert. Robert quickly leaves Edinburgh. The second part of the novel is Robert's account. He relates growing up under the Rev. Wringhim's influence, who declared Robert a member of "the elect." Soon after, Gil-Martin appears, and quickly dominates Robert, directing his actions and beliefs toward evil. Robert soon believes that it is his mission to "cut sinners off with the sword". The confession tracks Robert's fall into madness, until he loses control over his own identity, flees to the country and finally commits suicide.
