520 1 $aThe notion of presupposition, introduced into philosophical currency by Strawson, has been taken up and widely used in linguistics. But whatever precision the notion originally possessed has largely been lost in the transfer: grammarians have tended to stretch the notion to cover a wide range of semantic and pragmatic relations. Deirdre Wilson's book is a timely attempt to retrieve some clarity in this area. The book is divided into three parts. In Part I, Dr. Wilson discusses the claim that an adequate semantic theory must not only assign truth- conditions to each sentence, but must also generate assignments of truth-value conditions or logical presuppositions. Part II deals with the view that there is more to semantics than the assignment of truth- conditions (or truth-value conditions), and that an adequate theory must also generate the sentence-specific pragmatic presuppositions that need to be satisfied if the use of a sentence is to constitute a felicitous speech- act. And in the final part of the book, Dr. Wilson discusses the sort of presuppositions that are involved in using 'but' rather than 'and', or 'deprive' rather than 'spare'. The main conclusions throughout are sober and attractive; the supporting arguments are more of a mixed bag. -- from JSTOR http://www.jstor.org (Sep. 25, 2012).
