520 $aIn 1850, HMS Investigator was sent to search for the lost Franklin expedition. The explorers failed in that mission, but succeeded in locating the final link of the Northwest Passage route that Franklin had been seeking. After multiple setbacks and facing death by starvation and scurvy, the crew was rescued by a Royal Navy sledge team from HMS Resolute, and the ship was abandoned in Mercy Bay. One hundred and sixty years later, despite all our technological advancements, a mission to the Arctic was still a formidable challenge, but in 2010 Parks Canada sent a team of underwater archaeologists to locate the wreck. They found it, still in excellent condition, on the floor of Mercy Bay, off the shore of what is now Aulavik National Park. This book presents the amazing story of the ongoing exploration of Canada's Arctic along with the first underwater images of the wreck.
