520 $aIn this letter to Amos A. Phelps, Erasmus Darwin Moore writes about the progress he made in pursuing Rebecca Bartlett in courtship. He visited to Smithfield, had himself introduced through a mutual friend, and had an interview with her, at which she expresses her wish that the matter be pursued no further. Moore speculates that this may due to the way she was treated by her previous pursuer, and that he may need to remain a friend to her for some time before making a further move.
