520 $aThis book is an extension of Monmonier's earlier book, How to lie with maps. As powerful tools of persuasion in science and public affairs, maps have had a remarkable effect on our view of the world, our health, and the impact of our votes. At the root of their power is our frequently unquestioning acceptance of cartographic messages. But the process of map-making requires cartographers to limit content in order to create a readable map, and so allows them to manipulate their audience with the information they choose to include. The goal here is to take a tour of the most striking examples of map controversy, to explore the ways maps are used to convince people and by examining how maps can play various roles as debating strategies, their convincingly crisp lines and labels effectively concealing an argument's tenuous assumptions.--Adapted from introduction.
