After studying for a short time in London he returned to Edinburgh where he established a large general practice. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1823, and in 1828 was made physician to the King in Scotland. Abercrombie made important contributions to neuropathology. The above work, first published in 1828, was based on studies which first appeared in the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal. It contains case histories and pathological studies along with comments on over 150 cases describing a variety of neurological conditions.
