520 $aOn the day he gets his call-up papers, jazz musician Chas Challinor's wife, Annie, is killed in the London blitz. Chas is badly injured and their daughter, Billie, is evacuated to Yorkshire. After coming out of hospital Chas is reunited with Billie and he lodges with Liz Morris in Leeds. Chas and Liz form a relationship but he is still in love with Annie. And he has a duty to protect his only daughter Billie. Time goes by and Chas feels that he is recovered enough to join the army but on June 6th 1944, D Day, he goes over to France and dies a hero's death, leaving Billie an orphan. Chas's late wife, Annie, has a brother, Cedric, who is a London lawyer and a member of a major criminal family. He convinces Liz that as he's Billie's only blood relative he has both a moral and legal right to look after the girl. But Cedric is set out to swindle Billie out of her inheritance and now Liz must fight to keep Billie and ensure that justice is done.
