En 1944, le docteur François Wetterwald, chirurgien et animateur du réseau de Résistance "vengeance", est déporté au camp de concentration de Mauthausen, puis affecté à l'"hôpital" d'une de ses annexes, Ebensee. Il rédigea Les morts inutiles durant sa détention et à son retour en France en 1945. Si l'on peut parler d'un foisonnement de la "littérature concentrationnaire", son texte reste toujours relativement confidentiel pour les raisons évoquées dans cette édition.
