The birth of lawn tennis can be traced back to 1858, when Major Henry Gem, a solicitor and clerk to the magistrates in Birmingham, and Major Walter Clopton Wingfield, a member of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms at the court of Queen Victoria, marked out a lawn in Edgbaston, Warwickshire, and called it a tennis court.
