L'ossète est une langue iranienne parlée au Caucase central par presque un demi-million de locuteurs. L'intérêt croissant que suscite cette langue s'explique par son histoire et ses caractéristiques. L'ossète est le dernier vestige vivant d'une branche de l'iranien qui, dans l'antiquité, regroupait les langues parlées par de grands peuples nomades des steppes d'Europe orientale. Il a donc une valeur de témoignage irremplaçable, d'autant que le relatif isolement, durant des siècles, des Ossètes a permis la conservation dans leur langue et leur culture d'archaïsmes extrêmement précieux pour l'étude de l'ancien monde nomade iranophone.
