L'histoire des débuts de l'hygiène mentale aux Etats-Unis, fortement teintée d'eugénisme, est également celle du commencement de l'action sociale moderne. Le mouvement contribue fortement à professionnaliser les premiers travailleurs sociaux. L'hygiène mentale doit beaucoup à l'influence d'un philosophe pragmatiste : William James.
