The Marlow Family are holidaying at their cousin Jon's farm (Trennels) after WW2. Early one morning Nicola meets Patrick Merrick, her brother's friend from before the war, and helps him with one of his falcons. They become friends and Nicola continues to help him with the falcons throughout the holidays and rides his old pony Mr Buster. The family participates in the local festival and riding competition, while major decisions are made about their future
