Edition Notes
Translated by L. Andro [pseud.] from Beyle's "Vies de Haydn, de Mozart et de Métastase", the 1st edition of which was published in 1814, under the pseudonym L. A. C. Bombet, as "Lettres sur de célèbre compositeur Joseph Haydn [etc.]" The "Nachwort" ("Stendhal und die musik") by Romain Rolland, is a translation, by O. Grautoff, of the preface of D. Muller's edition of the "Vies", Paris, 1914.
The life of Haydn is, in the main, plagiarized from G. Carpani's Le Haydine (Milan, 1812)
