João da Câmara was a Portuguese playwright. He became Portugal’s outstanding dramatist at the end of the 19th century with such works as Afonso VI (1890), Rosa enjeitada (1901; “Rose Abandoned”), and Os velhos (1893; “The Old Ones”); and was the first Portuguese person nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
