Part of the collection of rare and baroque books (17th and 18th century) of the Universidad Javeriana includes a peculiar group: the colonial emblem books of the Jesuit order. These books are from the holdings of the Library of Philosophy and Theology "Mario Valenzuela" and the general Library of the University. The present illustrated catalogue is a careful selection of 12 emblem books of the baroque period, focusing on the different details (motto, lemma, picture, imago, etc.) of the emblems and the important role that these illustrations played as a source of inspiration for artists in Nueva Granada. The book "Books of Emblems. Image and Word in the Baroque", is the fourth publication of the series that the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and Villegas publishers started in 2009 to promote the bibliographic patrimony which lies in the Historic Archive, the libraries of the University, the Biblioteca General Alfonso Borrero Cabal S.J. and the Biblioteca de Filosofía y Teología Mario Valenzuela, S.J."
