Outlines relationship between scientific ideas, medical practice and public health in Yucatan during first decades after independence. Analyzes ways in which medical and scientific ideas of time explained and were used to address new illncsses. Narrates dissemination and impact of this knowledge on prevention and on medical attention given to public during cholera epidemic . Also studies management of public health by nascent state, plus reception and acceptance of ideas from Europe to stem progress of disease.
