He practices an alternative orthography in his writing producing his literature phonetically replicating the sounds of the spoken Spanish language. Meléndes was awarded the PEN Club of Puerto Rico National Literary Prize in 2002 and Instituto de Cultura Premio de Poesía & Ensayo (2007, 2008).
