The poem by Mallarmé is printed in typographically compressed format as "Préface," leaves [2-3]. The "image" on leaves [4-23] consists of bars representing the typography of the original edition of the poem, which was published in 1914 by Éditions de la Nouvelle revue française and subsequently reprinted by Gallimard.

Comprises 30 leaves of translucent paper. Includes 5 blank leaves, not counted in collation: 2 at beginning and one at end, and one preceding and one following "Préface." The bars representing the poem are printed on alternate pairs of opposite pages, but are visible in reverse on the intervening blank pages.

Issued in white paper covers, printed in black and red.
