After the Nazis' rise to power in 1933, around 18,000 Jews and 2,000 other emigrants sought refuge in Italy, among them many scholars. In recent years, research on the history of German scholarly institutions in Italy has intensified, often in the context of anniversaries. A detailed study on the institutions of the Vatican where German-speaking scholars found refuge after 1933, however, including the scholarly institution at the Teutonic Cemetery in Vatican City, has not been done. In March 2013, a conference held on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Römische Institut der Görres-Gesellschaft attempted to fulfill in part this research goal. This volume is a collection of the contributions from that conference.
