Original opera, with libretto by Aleksandr Borodin after a scenario by Vladimir Vasil'yevich Stasov, largely based on the anonymous (?)12th-century epic Slovo o polku Igoreve, first performed in St. Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theatre, 23 October 1890; first performed with this French translation in Brussels, 14 November 1924.
