An edition of Berbuto (2021)

Berbuto

This publication is the result of long-term work carried out by Margot Potelle as part of her master's thesis in Art History and Archeology (2018, directed by Jean-Patrick Duchesne and Julie Bawin). The Wittert Museum has been conserving numerous works by the artist as well as various archival documents for several years now. The study of these sources has enabled the author to measure the full complexity of Augusta Berbuto's personality, to understand her career and to analyze the different facets of her production. The result is a presentation that honors this woman with a touching personality. We discover his unconventional life course, his strong ties with Marie Delcourt, Alexis Curvers or Léon-Ernest Halkin and of course, his artistic production where the human figure is omnipresent, and which refers both to mythology and to religion, both in war and in a dream world. Perfect complement to the visit of the exhibition, the work is enriched with a sensitive text, written by Christian Noorbergen, as well as the list of identified exhibitions in which Augusta took part. While this is inevitably a partial view of the subject, this publication remains the only monograph published to date on the artist.
