Ce livre résulte des entretiens réalisés par l'auteur entre 1982 et 1984, dans le Morvan, avec Armand Simonnot ancien bûcheron, militant pacifiste puis communiste, premier Franc-Tireur et Partisan de l'Yonne, devenu garde du corps du dirigeant communiste Charles Tillon. Le lecteur saisira le fonctionnement des microsociétés villageoises et les rouages de la vie politique dans l'Yonne. Ainsi, l'auteur se livre à une microhistoire centrée sur l'étude des valeurs personnelles de quelques acteurs du "court XXe siècle".
