L'histoire de deux quêtes: celle de Beethoven qui aimerait trouver un piano au son plus ample que les "pianoforte" de l'époque, et celle de Gianni Malifici, un jeune artisan romain qui a construit un instrument destiné au grand compositeur. Pour se rencontrer, tous deux traversent l'Europe ravagée par les guerres napoléoniennes. Chez son mécène, Beethoven refuse de jouer pour les représentants militaires du tyran. La musique n'a de sens que si elle participe à la lutte des peuples pour leur liberté.
