Niederungen ist das erste Werk von Herta Müller, das 1982 in Bukarest und 1984 in einer überarbeiteten Fassung im Berliner Rotbuch Verlag erschien. Das Buch ist eine Sammlung von Geschichten über das Leben in Rumänien unter dem Kommunismus, die die Gewalt und die Korruption veranschaulichen und auf den Erfahrungen der Autorin in ihrer Jugend in einem Dorf im deutschsprachigen Teil des Landes basieren.

Niederungen (Nadirs) is the first work by Herta Müller, published in Bucharest in 1982 and in a revised version in Berlin's Rotbuch Verlag in 1984. The book is a collection of stories on life in Romania under Communism, illustrating the violence and the corruption, and based on the writer's experience in her youth, in a village in the German-speaking part of the country.
