Dix ans, ou peut-être onze. Enaiat ne connaît pas son âge, mais il sait déjà qu'il est condamné à mort. Etre hazara, une ethnie haïe en Afghanistan par les Pachtounes et les talibans, est son seul crime. Pour le protéger, sa mère l'abandonne de l'autre côté de la frontière, au Pakistan. Commence alors pour ce bonhomme un périple de cinq ans pour rejoindre l'Italie en passant par l'Iran, la Turquie et la Grèce. Louer ses services contre un bol de soupe, passer les frontières dissimulé dans le double-fond d'un camion, braver la mer en canot pneumatique, voilà son quotidien. Un quotidien où la débrouille le dispute à la peur, l'entraide à la brutalité. Mais comme tous ceux qui témoignent de l'insoutenable, c'est sans amertume, avec une tranquille objectivité et pas mal d'ironie, qu'il raconte les étapes de ce voyage insensé.
