The book entitled The Heroic Saint Francis Xavier is authored by Patrick J. Lobo. The book reveals the Live of Saint Francis Xavier in an attractive manner. He writes about St. Francis as if is alive. The author has done it well; the book can be read without boredom by everyone as the language is lucid. The life of this Great Hero Gonecho Saib is written differently, for the readers. It starts with the prologue and gives the history from the Pentecost wherein the disciples of Jesus receives the Holy Spirit, and starts proclaiming Jesus fearlessly. He writes significantly about St. Peter who gives the first sermon without fear, and St. Paul who was chosen by Christ to preach the Gospel. It follows smoothly and methodology and leads into the life of poverty of St. Francis of Assisi.
The author makes a stunning detection about the influence of St. Francis of Assisi on the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola. How he had experienced a radical conversion to Christ and had devoted his life to helping others in their spiritual quests. The life sketch of the St. Ignatius of Loyola is given to understand the back ground of the events in the life of St. Francis Xavier. The story of the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola comes to close and the reader gets eager and impatient to know the life of St. Francis.
The narrative of the St. Francis starts with his birth, youth and immediately takes the reader to the University of Paris. The event at the University gives details about his character as a scholar and academic. His achievement and how he devoted himself to the intellectual life. While reading, the reader becomes travel companion along with the story.
The reader gets curious when St. Francis surrenders his life for the service of the Lord through the influence of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Thereafter, impatient he was to serves the Lord, at once accepts the invitation for preaching the gospel to the Fareast. The story gets interesting as he travels from Rome to Lisbon. The impatient waiting at Lisbon for the journey to Goa is candidly brought out. The parting from Lisbon and the arrival at Goa, the starting of the missionary work in Goa, the preaching the Gospel, impatiently taking off to the Fishery coast, the fire burning within St. Francis, stands out clearly. His missionary to Travancore, Mannar, Ceylon, Maylapore, Moluccas and Japan are given with the discretions of the Maps. The Voyage to Japan and hardship, the language barriers, setback due to the dress attire is all there. The final mission and the failure to go the China, the betrayal, and the lone death on the island at Sacian are emotional. The travel of the incorruptible Body of the Saint from Malacca to Goa, the final resting place the examination and the dissections, the spread of the relics to the world gives the reader the Heroic side of the Saint. Finally the book ends with the explanation of the Basilica of Bom Jesus the Tom of St. Francis Xavier and the expositions of the relics till date; The Heroic Saint Francis Xavier is a book for everyone to read.
The book is illustrated with sketches, maps of the journeys, paintings, plans and colour photographs.
