Edition Notes

Caption title.

Name of printer from colophon.

Dated on p. 8: Fait au Port-Républicain, le 19 floréal, an 9 de la République française une et indivisible [i.e. May 9, 1801 in the Georgian calendar]. Signé Borgella, président.

First edition of the constitution as drawn up by Toussaint-Louverture was printed in Cap-Français and printed by the widow Leroux around the year 1800. The caption title differs from this edition. Bissainthe suggests that the place of publication of this second edition is also Cap-Français, as indicated by the Port-Républicain place of signing on p. 8. The name of the printer may be false, as it indicates a printer's address in Paris [rue de la Vielle-Boucherie, as it should be, here printed as Bouclerie, indicated a more Creole interpretation]. Neither the first nor second edition of the constitutions as drawn up by Toussaint-Louverture were ever ratified.
