Edition Notes
Title and imprint information taken from Anker, J. Bird books, 76.
Originally issued in 42 cahiers of 24 hand-colored plates each, with no accompanying text or titles. Known also as "Daubenton's Planches enluminées" and as "Buffon's Planches enluminées", since they were produced at Buffon's instigation for his Histoire naturelle. Of the 1008 plates, 35 are of other animals besides birds (28 insects, 3 reptiles & amphibians, 4 corals).
The plates were drawn and engraved by F.N. Martinet under the supervision of E.L. Daubenton ('D le cadet'), who was a relation of L.J.M. Daubenton, Buffon's collaborator in the Histoire naturelle--Cf. Anker, Bird books, p. 108.
