Edition Notes
Goff S-343
BM 15th cent. ,IV, p. 107 (IA.18862, 18864, 18866) & p. 108 (IA.1868)
No collective t.p. Titles taken from captions to each of the 4 works.
Edited by Joannes Sulpitius Verulanus. The authors collected here are from those traditionally known as Scriptores rei militaris.
Vegetius' work is commonly titled De re militari; Aelianus' work, written in Greek, is known by the Latin title Tactica; Frontinus' is as titled here; the De vocabulis rei militaris, passing under the name of one Modestus, is believed to have been copied from Vegetius in the 15th cent.
The 4 parts were undoubtedly also sold separately. Because of their lack of pagination and signing, it would be difficult to determine a proper order for the parts (they are found in various combinations; cf. Goff and BM 15th cent.), save for a statement in the editor's note on p. [2]: Tres de ea re scriptores egregios quos nuperrime recognoui, Vegetium, Aelianum, & Frontinum, simul coniunxi & ut emendatissimi in tuas & in aliorum manus uenirent effeci.
Imprint from Goff. Each work has its own colophon; all 4 read the same up to the date: Impressum Rom[a]e per ... Eucharium Silber alias Franck. The dates in the 1st 2 colophons are expressed entirely in words; in modern reckoning they are respectively 29 Jan. 1487 and 15 Feb. 1487. The latter 2 colophons have dates anno 1487 die vero prima Iunii and anno Domini 1487 septimo Idus Iunii [7 June].
The ill. (military tactical formations) are created by the use of ordinary printer's types arranged in patterns showing the positioning of troops.
Signatures: [1-6⁸ 7¹⁰ 8-9⁸ 10⁴ 11⁸ 12-17⁸ 18⁶].
LC copy has p. [187-188] bound after p. [201-202]. With marginalia and ms. collective t.p. on p. [1] by an early owner, Leopoldus Laudati (?; name appears on p. [1], [3], [117] , and [268], each time defaced by extra pen strokes transforming/concealing the name) who has foliated the leaves, erroneously so after the 88th leaf because he repeated that number. Modern binding with binder's title: Rei militares [sic] scriptores principes. With bookplate of Leon S. Olschki.
