Averil Lady Swinfen was born Averil Kathleen Suzanne Humphreys, the daughter of Major William Marshall Hickman Humphreys of Broomfield House, Middleton, County Cork. She married Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew Knowles, by whom she had a son, Roderic and a daughter Coral. In 1950 she married Charles Swinfen, the 2nd Baron Lord Swinfen, a barrister, who died in 1977.
