Edgar Allan Poe, Jr., was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Edgar Allan Poe (1872-1961) and Annye Thornton (neé McCay) Poe (1867-1928). He was born 87 years after his illustrious namesake, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), and he is related to Mr. Poe through both sides of his family. Edgar married Katharine M. (neé Richards) Poe and had one son, Edgar Allan "Pudge" Poe III (1925-2011).
The mystery story has changed since Edgar Allan Poe published the first mystery story, Murders in the Rue Morgue, which is still judged a masterpiece in the field. Edgar Allan Poe, Jr., modeled his first mystery novel, The Party House Murders, after the technique of the hard-boiled sleuth popular in modern American fiction.
