Academia de Genealogía y Heráldica Mota-Padilla

According with an article published in the "Genealogical Journal", the Academia de Genealogía y Heráldica Mota-Padilla was the first genealogical association in Latin America.

It was established in Guadalajara (Jalisco, Mexico) on 12 January 1920 by SALVADOR MOTA-VELASCO, JOSE IGNACIO DAVILA GARIBI, ENRIQUE EDUARDO LOPEZ, JORGE VEREA Y VALLARTA, and ALBERTO SANTOSCOY. It was erected in memory of the first Historian of New Galice, Matías Ángel de la Mota y Padilla (author of "Historia de la Conquista del Reino de la Nueva Galicia", 1741) to promote the Historical studies from the Genealogical and Heraldic points of view; among its members, SALVADOR MOTA-VELASCO was direct descendant of the aftermentioned Matías Ángel de la Mota y Padilla.

With the passing of time many Genealogy and Heraldry's enthusiasts became members of this institution; they gathered monthly and produced some interesting works (some of them still unpublished)... After most of its original members died, the Academia became less active; then, JORGE VEREA Y VALLARTA's own nephew, RICARDO LANCASTER-JONES Y VEREA, reorganized it between 195o-53. Its first public act is dated on 8 May 1953, its first publised work, the Academia's "Anuario" was printed in 1954.

This institution, contributed with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Academia Mexicana de Genealogía y Heráldica, during the microfilming process of the complete and well preserved Diocese of Guadalajara's Church records (1953-71). Nowadays, a copy of these microfilms are located in the Archivo General de la Nación (Mexico City) and are available for public consultation under the guidelines and regulations of the same Archivo General de la Nación.

After RICARDO LANCASTER-JONES Y VEREA's death (1983), the institution became extint.
