Yves Coppens

Yves Coppens, né le 9 août 1934 à Vannes (Morbihan) et mort le 22 juin 2022 dans le 11e arrondissement de Paris, est un paléontologue et paléoanthropologue français, professeur émérite au Muséum national d'histoire naturelle et au Collège de France. Son nom est attaché en France à la découverte, en 1974 en Éthiopie, du fossile d'Australopithèque surnommé Lucy, en tant que codirecteur de l'équipe qui l'a mis au jour, avec l'Américain Donald Johanson et le Français Maurice Taieb.


Yves Coppens, born on August 9, 1934 in Vannes (Morbihan) and died on June 22, 2022 in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, was a French paleontologist and paleoanthropologist, professor emeritus at the National Museum of Natural History and the Collège de France. In France, his name is associated with the discovery, in 1974 in Ethiopia, of the Australopithecus fossil nicknamed Lucy, as co-director of the team that unearthed it, with the American Donald Johanson and the Frenchman Maurice Taieb.
